Celebrate America!

I needed a broom. You know the sort… the one with the sturdy, wooden handle, tightly woven natural straw bristles, the hard-working, old-fashioned kind that last and last, the ones that are dependable.

My husband volunteered to pick one up while he was running other errands. I told him what I needed; I showed him my other one, the straw worn down next to nothing, although still somewhat useable and  intact. He came home, so proud of himself for choosing a more modern broom–lightweight plastic handle, plastic bristles, pretty color, and he added, “Less expensive!”

It was time to put the broom to work;  yes it was pretty… it wasn’t what I asked for, wasn’t what I wanted or expected, but we’ll see what she can do… what she’s made of. On the second sweep, the handle broke at the base of the broom.  I had barely used any pressure, and it just snapped in two! Oh sure, it was a ‘light-weight’ alright, and definitely cheap!  I returned the broom to the store, and the saleslady asked, “Do you want to go get another one?” I said, “No! I want something made in America!”

‘Made in America’ has always stood for quality. Sturdy construction. Sound design. Quality parts.  Well-thought out ideas– a ‘Zen’ of thinking from beginning to end. It’s tough to find American made products these days… we have to search them out, make a concentrated effort, but it is soooototally worth it.

Woo-hoo… 30% Discount on each APO order–always!

Take note: J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar and products are totally, and lovingly hand-made in America…  J.R. has literally poured his heart and soul into each shampoo bar from the mixing of each formulation specific bar, to the heating, drying, hand cutting, and wrapping.  He uses  the best oils; skin softening  Jojoba, anti-oxidant Rosemary, anti-septic and anti-fungal Lavender, Tea Tree to battle skin infections,  moisturizing Almond oil,  invigorating peppermint oil, Aloe Vera for minor skin irritations, and the list goes on.  The bar contains no SLS (Sodium Laurel  Sulfate, a very harsh, stripping detergent), is not tested on animals, nor contains animal products. Just 100% AWESOME!

Celebrate America by using products made in the USA… J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar… even the wrapper is patriotic!

Each Shampoo Bar is so natural, so healthy, so pure (made with fresh, sparkling clean, New Hampshire spring water), so completely bio-degradable from the beginning to the end, that something as good as this–as good for us as this, is fortunately for you and me, Made in America! Frankly, I feel like shouting that out!  We are proud of that!

Lucian Tielens realized the importance of quality when he spoke of  using just about anything within arm’s reach that produced suds to wash his hair… “I’ve run the gamut and used pretty much anything you can think of to wash my hair at one time or another, so I came to appreciate a good quality hair product.”

Shrunken clothing, ripped seams, broken tools, brooms snapped in two… useless, cheap, throw-away items that don’t work, don’t do the job promised, and don’t perform are a waste of my time and money.  J.R.LIGGETT’S Made in America shampoo bar is quality personified. It’s what I reach for while by-passing the 3 for $4 ’deal’ on the store shelf, because I know this shampoo bar delivers from every angle.  No broken promises, satisfaction guaranteed, and it will definitely sweep you off your feet!

Have a happy and safe July 4th!

Coming Home to Goodness

The other morning I woke up practically on fire with the thought of how important it is  to start  baby on the right track when it comes to what is being used on his or her skin.  This is something I feel so strongly about.  As loving and concerned Mommas we want the best for our children; clothing made of natural fibers, safe, non-toxic toys, proper socialization, adequate physical activity, fresh clean air, and natural healthy food.  These are so important, but just as critical are the products chosen for baby’s hair and skin.

How does that soft, new, velvety skin go from point A to point Z?  The above photo illustrates a skin range of 88 years (my Father-in-Law and his 22nd Great Grandchild!)  What happens during that time-line? What is genetic, and what can be influenced or even to an extent, controlled?  Our DNA determines the rate at which we age, but we can make a significant (positive!) contribution to our hair and skin condition.

If by chance you’ve never heard of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, please take note:     Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a negatively charged detergent and is used all over the world. SLS is the universal standard used to irritate skin in clinical testing so medical researchers can test ingredients to see how fast the skin heals.  It is commonly found in liquid soaps and shampoos, bubble baths, bath and shower gels, and in most toothpaste marketed throughout the world.  SLS has shown penetration into the eyes, as well as systemic tissues (brain, heart, liver, etc.). Because SLS and related substances are widely used in many populations on a daily basis in soaps and shampoos, there is an immediate concern relating to the penetration of these chemicals into the eyes and other tissues. This is especially important in infants, where considerable growth is occurring, because a much greater uptake occurs in tissues of younger eyes, and SLS changes the amounts of some proteins in cells from eye tissues. Tissues of young eyes may be more susceptible to alteration by SLS.¹

Are you a label reader? If so, you may have noticed SLS in many of your body care products, and unfortunately, many children’s shampoos and bubble baths also contain this detergent. Light bulb moment here: “Detergent”… doesn’t that sound more like something you use on your greasy dishes, your muddy car or your soiled laundry?  But to use it daily on that precious baby skin?  None of J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars or products contain any detergents. When I first heard this, my question was, “Then how do they clean?”  The shampoo bars remove the excess oils, dirt, and grime, but leave some natural, needed oils intact to keep your scalp and body healthy. The bars are made with nourishing oils to balance your own body and scalp oils, and specific herbal properties address various skin and hair issues and have moisturizing ingredients to alleviate dryness.

When we hold a baby, we are holding the future in our very hands! And not only that particular baby’s future, but the future of the world!  Without a doubt, this is important “stuff’!  And it’s important enough– no, I would say vital that we as good Moms start them off on a healthy track by using J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar.  However, I will stress  that J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars do not contain the potentially carcinogenic chemical  (link) that  prevents the stinging that can result if shampoo happens to get into the eyes, so please, take normal precautions to protect babies and children’s eyes just as you would your own.

Moms need any extra moments they can grab, and come bath time, think how easy it is to use just one healthy, convenient product for baby. You’ve got your hands full (literally!) with a slippery baby, and having that one easily manageable bar to use on baby’s hair and skin makes bathtime much simpler.  No plastic bottle to open, no spillage, no waste!  One product!  And don’t forget, not only is the shampoo bar not stripping the natural scalp oil, it’s also not stripping the natural skin oils… will you need to use body lotion? You be the judge.

Okay, quick run-down here, cause I know you don’t have all day… which bar is best for baby?  I would suggest any of the following three:

  • Original Formula:  Contains olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, sodium hydroxide, and pure spring water.  Fragrance:  Rose oil (Mmmm… this smells so soft and fresh).  This formula works for nearly everyone including those with severe allergies and sensitivities.
  • Tea Tree and Hemp: Contains olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, sodium hydroxide, and pure spring water.  Fragrance: None.  This formula works well for dermatological issues like itchy, flaky, scalp conditions.
  • Ultra Balanced: Contains olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, sodium hydroxide, pure spring water, jojoba oil, and almond oil.  Unscented.  This formula works well in normalizing the natural oils in your hair and on your scalp. Very gentle and creamy feel.

And before I forget, here’s a really nifty idea: J.R.LIGGETT’S Mini Traveler.  Wouldn’t this be a smart thing to tuck in your purse, the diaper bag and pack along with baby’s clothing for a short trip?  Remember, J.R. LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars are handmade… I think that’s cool. When I unwrap a bar, I get a kick out of the little creases I sometimes find in a new bar; and when I breathe in the freshness it just seems so comfortable, and calm, like coming home… home to all that is welcoming and good and healthy.

A Quick “Thank You”…

My Mama taught me at an early age to always say “Thank You”, so I’m just passing along what Mama taught me…  You might not hear that little word (powerful though it is) with much regularity nowadays, but you’re going to hear it now.

We now have 31 blog and comment followers, and for that reason, I am humbled.  I was pretty excited when I noticed we had 5 people who found  it worth their time to stop by and garner a few nuggets of useful information about J.R.LIGGETT’S awesome, earth-friendly, people empowering products and a business that cares! Yes, I  believe it is that great!

A few of you have asked some good questions and I appreciate that, I’m always here to help anyway I can (literally, I’m almost always here!).

Short & sweet… just a quick “Thank You” for appreciating what we do, our commitment to you, and yes, for coming along for the ride!

Hey, spring is on the way, I’m excited, aren’t you?

A Heartfelt Post

When I first used J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar, I knew I’d changed my shampoo choice forever, but what I didn’t realize was the direction that decision would take me and the repercussions thereof.  I began taking note of and researching  the ingredients in my personal care products; not only shampoo, but body soap, body washes, toothpaste, bar soap, liquid hand soap, facial moisturizers, body lotion,  and other everyday hygiene products that you and I purchase simply because of habit or advertising, without even giving a thought to the safety of the ingredients. For years we’ve assumed that if the Food & Drug Administration has given the green light to a product, then everything’s cool… not necessarily so.

J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar does  not contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, a harsh, petroleum-based, extremely drying detergent used in many soaps, shampoos, body washes, and even toothpaste!  I have used liquid shampoos and soaps that contained SLS for most of my life and always wondered why even though the labels screamed, “Contains Moisturizers!”,  I still had dry hair, and skin so dry  that it felt like it was going to tear. At one point, I had to forego using soap on my face, only washing with warm water. Little did I know!

“Detergent-Free”… J.R.LIGGETT’S products contain real, honest to goodness, down to earth moisturizing oils like fragrant lavender, rosemary, jojoba, sweet almond… hand-made in the USA with fresh, clean, clear New Hampshire spring water… no animal testing, no animal by-products, bio-degradable ingredients, even a bio-degradable paper bar wrapper. I love the convenience of using the Shampoo Bar for not only my hair, but also for my body, as a facial cleanser, and a shaving cream. It’s natural, non-irritating, fragrant, soft and soothing.  It’s an easy, healthy choice; just one product, nothing to think about, nothing to worry about.

Becoming an educated consumer started me on a path of healthy choices; not just hygiene products, but more of an awareness of how I live daily… healthy food choices, increasing my physical activity, and in general, seeing the wisdom of taking care of the only body I have. We know medical costs are exorbitant, and if we can avoid illness from unhealthy life and food choices, we’ll be ahead of the pack.  I’ve found that a lot of  people still “just don’t get it”.  They just don’t understand a bar shampoo, or why they should avoid SLS and how many products contain this harsh detergent.  Avoiding harmful chems in your personal body care products is as important as a healthy diet, physical activity, fresh, clean air, enriching relationships, and a sound mind. J.R.LIGGETT’S is actually a lifestyle concept, an important part of who we are and where we need to be.

Is there someone in your life whose health and well-being is important enough that you could share with them the wisdom of choosing J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar? Be a ‘love’ and show another person the path to a healthier lifestyle.

The Basics: J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars

hand holding single shampoo bar

Stopping in at Facebook, I often see questions regarding which J.R.LIGGETT Shampoo Bar would work for a particular hair or scalp issue; “I have fragile, breakable, dry, colored hair. What specific bar would work for me?’   “I’m a nursing mama with a dry scalp, what do you suggest?”  “What are the essential oils of the Original Bar?”  “I have long, curly hair…thick hair, ethnic hair…”  “What works on psoriasis?”   ”Do I need a conditioner?”  “I’m allergic to perfumes, do you have an un-scented bar?”  ”Is your product tested on animals?”  ”If there are no detergents, how does it clean my hair?”  (That was my question when I first discovered J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar).   Want fast answers? It’s really quite simple,  just check it out here.  Your ‘Go To’ page when you’ve just gotta know!

You’ve heard us mention the health dangers of Sodium Lauryl ”ether” Sulfate (SLES), and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)…  Be educated, be in the know, read here.  I   love a hot shower on a cold winter morning… unfortunately, hot water contributes to dry skin, so I always remember to use J.R.LIGGETT’S Foam Face & Body Wash—it does not contain SLS, a harsh, drying detergent.

And while I’m on the subject of dry skin, I’ve found the Body Oils to be indispensable. Just a few drops on rough knees, elbows, and feet before you turn in for a good night’s sleep… I’m amazed at the mileage I’m getting out of this product, seems as if it’s lasting forever…

No sneaky tricks, nothing to hide… just basic, down-home, products that make our lives more comfortable.  J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar: one beautiful, 100% handmade, creamy white, rectangle of healthy-for-you-and-the-environment-bio-degradable-goodness that can simplify your day–your life!
