Sometimes we don’t need to travel very far for an adventure, as adventure is more of an attitude and outlook on life. Not always a ‘mountain top experience”, but more often than not a “down to earth” path we may have been walking. Seems when we look back, what we thought was a trial and trouble at the time, has made us more interesting– and simply become a part of who we are.

Years ago I traveled to live on a ranch in the country, 18 miles from the nearest (small) town. If I happened to be giving directions to someone on how to find me, I’d say “after you pass our mail box (three more miles to go), you begin to see Indians and covered wagons…” When you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into, it’s best to approach it as an adventure–that description seems to cover all sorts of mistakes, failures and successes.

Life in the country was like living on another planet; the world could have come to an end, and things wouldn’t have changed a whit. Animals need to be fed and watered no matter what day of the week, what sort of weather, whatever holiday it might be or how you happened to be feeling when the sun came up. If you’re new to that particular neck of the woods, all sorts of information about you has already been discussed amongst the neighbors–most not true; I say, let ‘em believe it… it adds to the adventure and the mystique.

It would have behooved me to have taken “Farming 101″, but I survived and thrived in spite of it. We raised chickens, and even though they once escaped from the barn in a snowstorm, and we lost some by way of coyotes, that spring, we still dined on fried chicken–after I helped cleaned them (referred to as “dressing”) wearing rubber gloves. I named the sheep, and in March, I was in charge of lambing– which usually goes smoothly unless Mama gives birth to more than two lambs, or if a lamb can’t figure out how to eat…

On that very concrete step where you see me standing, one warm summer day I stepped out on a long, black Bull snake and it felt like stepping on a rubber water hose. As that snake hissed, I jumped back inside the house so fast, I pulled the inside hook off the door. I kept a loaded 22 rifle on the kitchen table–it was light-weight and easy to shoot–and one night found myself holding it as a stranger drove up the drive–my knees literally knocking and shaking …

A heavy wet snow and high winds would take out our power; best get in plenty of firewood and fill buckets with water for drinking and filling the toilet. I cooked on the wood stove with a cast iron skillet, and with no electricity to be had, I delved into my book stash and worked on perfecting my art work. Early sundown meant early bedtime with only the sound of the fire popping in the wood stove, and the wind and coyotes howling outside.

But my “backyard” was big enough to keep me occupied. A “section and a half” –a section being a square mile–was my place to roam and discover. Not big by farming standards, but big enough that the nearest neighbors were a good five miles away–we liked that. Summer meant the cattle showed up, the alfalfa was growing, a garden full of vegetables was devoured ( I got on a carrot, fresh tomato, and eggplant eating kick), the cherry tree was loaded and ripe, and wheat was harvested. Early morning found me on the screened in porch sipping coffee and watching the barn swallows swooping in to construct their mud nests. Deer often ventured out with spotted twin fawns and one evening I spied a Bobcat was just a few feet from the house. Eastern Blue Birds flashed by in a streak of brilliant blue, and we could see the sky changing and weather coming in from miles away–you don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind is blowing…

We picked and shared apples from the 80 year-old plus apple tree–the name of the variety having been long forgotten. I sliced, diced, and made applesauce to freeze for the coming winter–another way to preserve a way of life on a ranch. And my most favorite memory… sleeping next to an open window during a light, autumn rain. A gentle breeze across my face, the fresh, cool air lightly stirring the window curtains.

The past, my past. An adventure. I didn’t travel far, I didn’t need to. Some year-round, all-encompassing, life advice: embrace adventure… you never know where it will take you or what you will learn.

I’d been bugging my husband for weeks to make a run up to the lake. I’d envisioned taking along a few sandwiches, a couple of chairs, he’d grab his fishing pole, I’d just sit and listen to the silence (and avoid flushing out any rattlesnakes). We would have a pleasant evening enjoying the solitude and view.

This guy lolly-gags. If it’s something he wants to do, I’d better get a move on. If the outing is my idea, he’s still dawdling and I’m waiting in the car. Go figure. At any rate, we arrived at the lake around sunset… it’s okay, not the end of the world.

I used to vacation here with my family when I was a kid. Aunts and Uncles, cousins, brothers… Uncle Les and Aunt Vernie had a ski boat and come summer, we put that puppy to the test. Skiing, boating, swimming off the dock while wearing those hulking orange life jackets that made a skinny-legged kid look like a barrel-chested wrestler. Playing on the sandy beaches, running up to the Marina cafe for grilled burgers and all the cold soda we wanted; just reach in that old metal Coca-Cola cooler filled with ice. Evening cookouts with Aunt Vernie’s stash of stale Fritos, hot dog and marshmallow roasts and plenty of laughter. We slept outside on fold out cots, under an inky sky jam-packed with stars. We felt safe; life was good, it was summer at it’s best.

My husband and I stood and looked. Things weren’t the same as they were some 40 odd years ago. In recent years, the lake’s water level has gone down. Where Uncle Les would launch his boat, the shoreline has receded to alarming levels. I thought to myself, the lake looks more like “The Pond”. Teathered a few feet away was a John Boat, still filled with life jackets, an outboard motor attached. No one else was around. Hmmm… trusting people.

Occasionally we would see and hear a fish jump, and turkey vultures made a slow, silent, mesmerizing flight path back and forth between two large stands of trees. Storm clouds were moving in over us and we could hear rumbles of thunder now and then. Somehow, this place now felt sad.

Patches of land where boaters once feared becoming dry-docked and finding their motor blades entangled with vegetation, were now high and dry. No danger here… simply steer your boat around the “land mass”. I remember Uncle Les driving across the dam, boat in tow, and looking out over the lake on a hot windy day, sunlight bouncing off the waves… “Whitecaps”, he’d say. Maybe we wouldn’t be skiing after all. On this visit, it was hard to imagine whitecaps, boaters or a deep, inviting lake. We’re in a serious drought situation around these parts, and this is one very obvious result of our lack of rain.

As we silently stood on the deserted boat ramp, the storm moved in closer. I said to my husband, “I smell rain”. That’s something we haven’t smelled for the better part of the summer. Oh, we’ve been teased with a few drops here and there, just enough to make a mess on the bottom of our shoes, but I stopped rolling up my car windows, stopped being concerned about leaving something out that might get rained on… I made a huge boo-boo last month. Forgot and left the outside hose on after watering flowers… next day I go downstairs to find the back corner of the basement flooded with water. Nothing deep mind you, we couldn’t launch a boat nor go skiing, but when the water bill arrived in the mail yesterday, come to find out I had wasted over 500 gallons of clean water. Yes, I feel bad. So much for my epiphany when I wrung out a sopping wet rag into a flower-pot earlier this summer. Profuse apologies all around–it also added $25 to our bill.

We headed back to town and stopped at a local restaurant to grab a late supper. I happened to look out the window… is that rain? Rain? Real, live rain, water from above to grow the flowers, grass, crops (whats left of them)? To wash the dirt and dust from the streets, to freshen the air, to refresh our spirits? It was pouring. We ran to the truck and skedaddled on home. A few streets away, the pavement was nearly dry. Talk about scattered precipitation… but just a few moments after getting inside, and while watching Fleetwood Mac on satellite TV, we lost signal. We heard it… I looked outside, it was pouring. I ran out and rolled up the car windows. Was anything outside that needed to be brought in? We sat back down and thought about how grateful we were for rain–any rain.

You know, J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar is a rain-saver. A water-saver. A smart thing to use. It rinses out easily; you use less water–way less than over 500 gallons. Don’t be a Dodo bird like me, remember to turn off the water spigot. But do be a wise owl and make J.R.LIGGETT’S an everyday, every way part of your life. You’ll need shorter showers, you’ll save water. It’s good for you and good for me. We’ll all be happier.

From the day we are born, we begin to age. Our lives began with that wonderfully soft, pliable skin and all those natural body oils that kept our skin, scalp and hair healthy and problem free. I won’t say it’s all downhill after that, but when we reach our mid-50′s and older, our scalp oils change, and usually not for the better. We will find, most likely on a daily basis, that our natural scalp oils have slowed production…what we all wished for when we were in our teen-age years, right? But now the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction and possibly for the first time in our life, we may be experiencing a dry, painful, itchy scalp. Our scalp may develop redness, sores, and dandruff-like flakes. At this point, it’s time to take quick action to address these symptoms.

J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars will not remove all of the natural oils your body produces. It removes the excess oils, the dirt and grime, but leaves some of your natural oils intact to keep your scalp and body healthy naturally. It can alleviate and in some cases, stop these annoyances in their tracks. All are detergent free, and made with nourishing oils to balance your own body and scalp oils, specific herbal properties that address various skin and hair issues, and moisturizing ingredients to alleviate dryness.

The brand new Virgin Coconut & Argan Oil Shampoo Bar has organic, luscious, moisturizing, sweet-scented, delicious Virgin Coconut Oil which keeps your hair strong, vitalized, moisturized and possessses anti-microbial properties. It retains natural moisture, and keeps hair soft and shiny. Argan Oil, a new “wonder oil”, that is extracted by hand from the nut of the Argan tree, gives new life to dry, tangled, flyaway hair and restores smoothness, strengthens, and gives your hair luster and shine. Similar to Jojoba Oil, but with its own dramatic enhancing performance properties. Argan Oil hydrates hair and is outstanding for uncontrollable, curly, unmanageable hair. Vitamin E has been added, and this is an excellent shampoo for color treated hair.

The Ultra Balanced Shampoo Bar is unscented, thus terrific for skin and breathing allergies. Years of inhaling smog, indoor pollutants, and absorption of chemicals through our skin, can result in various sensitivities.

The Original Shampoo Bar made with 100% vegetable oil, will not strip your natural oils, lathers quickly, cleans well, rinses out easily. Basic, simple, smart.

The Herbal Shampoo Bar is composed of an enticing combination of Rosemary, Lavender and Cedarwood. Rosemary contains anti-oxidants, is good for a dry itchy scalp, stimulates blood flow and circulation, soothes and conditions dry, flaky scalps, and is helpful in clearing dandruff. Lavender has anti-septic and anti-fungal properties, is good for treating eczema, heals wounds, and cuts. Fungal infections can affect healthy people as well as those with poor circulation, weak immune systems, diabetes, and people who take antibiotics or corticosteroid drugs. Warm, moist body areas such as the underarms, behind the ears, scalp and between the toes are likely locations for fungal growth. Lavender is also quite effective on lice, lice eggs, and nits. For centuries, Lavender has been well-known for its calming and relaxing properties–a real bonus for those who of us who may have trouble sleeping.

The Tea Tree & Hemp Oil Shampoo Bar is fragrance free and contains Tea Tree which is capable of killing stubborn germs and helps in clearing skin infections. Scabies and mites may be picked up from hospital stays, and the resultant scratching and itching can cause bleeding that can lead to infection. Tea Tree blends easily with the skin’s oils and alters the chemical barriers of the skin thereby making it inhospitable for the growth of fungi and other organisms. This shampoo bar also contains almond oil which is a great source of Vitamin E. Almond oil moisturizes and is great for itchy, dry skin and is very healing and soothing. It makes hair strong and thick and controls hair loss.

The Damaged and Dry Formula Shampoo Bar contains Vitamin E, Aloe Vera, and Almond Oil. Aloe Vera is terrific for cuts, burns, minor skin irritations, and is very soothing and healing. This Shampoo Bar is great for cold weather where the lack of humidity either indoors or out, can dry our skin.

The Jojoba & Peppermint Shampoo Bar contains Jojoba oil which promotes skin healing (sores and wounds) and fights bacteria. Peppermint relieves skin irritation, dermatitis, neutralizes the dryness of the scalp, and reduces skin redness. Plus, its fresh scent lifts our spirits and invigorates the scalp and skin.

Let’s face it, our skin changes with aging and time. The accumulation of those summers we spent developing our suntans, hours in a tanning bed, or just the passage of the years themselves, has taken a toll on the condition of our skin. We might not appreciate the effects, and to a certain extent, we do have to live with some of the results of the previous years of abusing one of our most visible organs–our skin. Some of us age more gracefully than others in the sense that our skin may look younger, but inevitably, skin tissue does break down and presents various troublesome issues to deal with.

In older men and women, the slowdown of the oil production in sebaceous glands continues and even gathers pace, so that the skin dries and thins. Older skin is less elastic, less oily, and thinner, thus making it more susceptible to injury. The signs of earlier skin abuse and damage becomes visible. In younger skin, the cells are replaced about every 21 to 40 days. As one ages, the cells regenerate more slowly, and the rate of replacement is approximately half what it was previously. We will notice our skin becoming drier and thinner due to fat loss. Scratches, cuts or bumps can take longer to heal. Older people will need to give their skin more care than when they were younger.

Many older people experience dry skin most often on their lower legs, elbows and lower arms. Some possible reasons could be from not drinking enough liquids, staying out in the sun, being in dry air (either indoors or outdoors), less oil produced, and using harsh, drying soaps and taking hot baths (warm water baths are less dehydrating). Because older people have thinner skin, scratching itches can cause bleeding that can lead to infection. Some medicines make the skin itchier. Itching can also cause sleep problems–waking up because of a feeling of ‘tightness’ in the skin and its resultant irritation. Severe itchy skin (pruritus) can be very uncomfortable and cause sleep loss and other symptoms of skin problems.

The most common physical problems in older adults are changes is how well they can see, hear, move, and talk. There is less arm and shoulder movement, slower reflexes, and unsteadiness. Arthritis may be affecting our hand and arm strength resulting in difficulty in opening containers, unscrewing lids or simply grasping an object. Safety is an issue as we age. We aren’t as limber or manually dexterous as we once were. With the Shampoo Bar, we can have the bar in one hand, lather up the hair or body and rinse, all the while holding onto a safety bar with the other hand– the Shampoo Bar is a safer solution for an unsteady body. The point is, the Shampoo Bar is not only for your hair, as it is perfect for all over body use, benefit, and enjoyment due to its mildness and lack of harsh chemicals.

We all can see the need to stretch our dollars, and J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars are known for value, quality, and affordability. As most liquid shampoos are mostly water, one 6.5 ounce bar equals approximately a 24 ounce bottle of shampoo. The Shampoo Bars normalize your hair oils resulting in a less frequent need to wash your hair, which means less skin and scalp dryness to deal with, ultimately resulting in less bar use. This may be one instance when getting older actually pays! There is no waste as there is no liquid to drip down one’s fingers and run down the drain. And why make decisions difficult with a cluttered tub surround holding many different and perhaps harmful bathing products? Using J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar for all bathing needs is a ‘value-wise’ solution.

J.R.LIGGETT’S Foam Face & Body Washes are an excellent accompaniment to the Shampoo Bars. Three scents are featured: Western Slope, Lemon Lime, and White Sage. All contain saponified olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil with safflower oil, almond, hemp or jojoba oil, and Vitamin E. No detergents to dry out the skin, only moisturizing ingredients to alleviate the dryness. The foam is so gentle, soft and feels luxurious… ahhhh… just what the doctor ordered.

Remember when taking a warm water shower or bath, to always use a soft cloth or sponge instead of a rough washcloth. Do not scrub or rub the skin extensively. Gently pat skin dry and then apply J.R.LIGGETT’S Spray Body Oils in Lavender, Lemon-Lime, or White Sage as a self-pampering, finishing touch. The body oils are a unique formula combination of fast absorbing oils that will moisturize your skin without feeling ‘greasy’. They do not contain any corn oil (for those with corn oil allergies) or olive oil (which does not absorb easily), or alcohol (which dries the skin). A little goes a long way. Such a simple and easy solution for dry skin.

Aging is inevitable, but J.R.LIGGETT’S products provide a solution to many of its accompanying problems.

What type of person subscribes to the values of J.R.LIGGETT’S? That thought crossed my mind the other day, and as I recalled the comments and praises of J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar users over the years, I came to the conclusion that one could at least generalize that most users have a certain amount of respect and interest in the great outdoors. Even if our daily work calls us to be inside, we still long to gaze at the clouds in the sky, and birds on the wing. We want to escape at some point during the day and just feel a gentle breeze in our hair or hear the leaves rustling as they tumble down a street. When evening comes, we can’t take our gaze away from the beauty of a setting sun. If we are fortunate enough to live near a park or wooded area, the ultimate pleasure is to take a leisurely stroll, and trade the man-created aspects of life in exchange for something real… There’s just something about studying the heroic actions of an ant trying to carry an object 3 times his size–and succeeding– that just softly strips away the cares of the day. I like to focus on something bigger than my problems–even if it happens to be smaller.

This past week I came across an editorial by Christopher Kimball, editor of Cook’s Illustrated magazine. It’s found in the current issue–September/October 2012– and entitled, “Sounds of Silence”. If you enjoy nature, I’d strongly suggest you take a read–after I read the piece, I felt as calm and laid back as a cat napping in a sunny window on a chilly day. Christopher Kimball– a much better writer than I by miles upon miles– speaks of the value of quietness, stillness, observance, and carefully measuring one’s words. And with that, I will measure my words, and just say, “read the article, you will enjoy it.”

But I want to include a quote from his story that spoke to my heart and how I feel about nature: “The woods are indifferent to human affairs; that is why nature’s conversation–the birdsong and the helter-skelter scurrying of chipmunks–is restorative. The words in our heads float away, are absorbed by the leaves, break apart into individual letters, and then disperse on the wind.” Ahhh… my thoughts exactly.

As a child growing up, my three older brothers and I spent hours playing in the woods that surrounded our home in the outlying area of St.Louis, Missouri. We lived on two acres of land, surrounded by thick woods, a meandering narrow creek, and miles and miles of cropland–mostly corn and soybeans. We practically grew up in the woods– making forts from holes dug into dirt banks, which my brothers then completed by felling small trees with hatchets, constructing a roof, and then, lining the floor with dried leaves. We swung on wild grapevines, eased ourselves across the creek on huge fallen trees, and ran barefoot through the cool loose dirt in freshly plowed fields collecting un-earthed Indian arrowheads along the way. In the fall, we picked pears from an ancient pear tree, gathered ears of corn for our rabbits and two pet goats (the goats would run along with us as a dog would), or just sat in the woods quietly by ourselves, breathing in the smell of decaying Cottonwood leaves, and seeing squirrels jump from limb to limb high above our heads. We loved the woods, and I loved to find my solace there.

I am the sort of person who likes the idea behind J.R.LIGGETT’S. So simple, so real, so down-to-earth. No hype, no frills. A nod towards nature in all aspects. Restorative, pure, handmade… yeah, I like that. It’s like a walk in the woods; campers, hikers, travelers–even arm-chair travelers, agree. Let’s get back to the earth–to the woods. Quietly unwrap a bar of J.R.LIGGETT’S… breathe in the scent of nature, and be restored.

My siblings and I are clearing out my Dad’s house. Dad has moved and the house contains so much stuff… drawers and cabinets filled with near-ancient things, closets full of clothing and shoes, newspaper clippings, books, photos. We’re coming across things from years back that he has used practically forever; amazingly, most things still function, although a lot worse for the wear. We’re sharing stories and laughing about private family jokes; it’s a time for transition and reflection, looking at what works in life and what doesn’t. One thing for sure, Dad didn’t spend money on fancy gadgets, he kept things simple. If it performed well and got the job done, there was no use chucking it.

As we have sorted through, we found a slide ruler, and I called dibs on Dad’s old wooden folding “tape” (I always wanted to play with it when I was a kid, but I knew I’d best leave it alone for fear of breaking). And then the kitchen ware; we found tried and true cast iron skillets, dishes that have stood the test of time and are now “collectables”, real silverware, old tea kettles, a simple ice cream scoop, a hand-powered juicer, and oh my gosh, even a wooden washboard and wash tub–no thank you, I’ll take my modern washer and dryer.

But you know, even though things have changed, these precursors to “modernity” assisted in a job well done. The reasons were quality, function, design, appearance… a complete “package” of sorts that simply did what it was designed to do. Yeah… that’s where I’m headed… J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar. An old-fashioned concept wrapped up in a modern package. A well-designed, well thought out product that fills the bill, that gets the job done without a lot of bells and whistles. Not a lot of fanfare or fancy foot-work, just a down to earth shampoo that makes it happen. That’s all it needs to do! Leaves your hair clean, shiny and healthy without added strange, unpronounceable chemicals. Doesn’t harm the environment, no plastic bottle to add to the landfill, easy to transport, mild enough for a body soap, shaving cream, wash out a garment, wash up a dish…

J.R.LIGGETT’S has withstood the test of time. And even though this shampoo bar could stand chest puffed out and all proud and smug-like, it’s really not necessary, cause quality stands for itself–it makes it own statement; it just keeps on keepin’ on…

We could have found a bar of J.R.LIGGETT’S amongst Dad’s stuff (actually, I found two bars that I had sent him), because you don’t throw out something that works… You keep it, you use it, and you tell others about it… just like I’m doing. Will you tell others too?

Announcing J.R.LIGGETT’S newest addition to a fantastic line of all natural shampoo bars… Virgin Coconut & Argan Oil Shampoo Bar! Recently unveiled at Salt Lake City, Utah’s Outdoor Retailer Show, this shampoo bar features organic, luscious, moisturizing, sweet-scented, delicious Virgin Coconut Oil (but please, don’t eat the bar!). Sweet-smelling coconut oil keeps hair strong, vitalized, moisturized, and is an excellent microbial agent. Vitamin E protects your hair from the effects of aging and keeps your scalp healthy. Plus, the fatty acids in coconut oil serve as very good anti-dandruff agents–far superior than any anti-dandruff shampoo you may find on the market.

And Argan Oil! I’d never heard of this before, but when I started digging through the information, wow– this stuff is fantastic! No wonder J.R. wanted to give us one more shampoo bar option to rave about! Argan oil gives new life to dry, tangled, fly-away hair. Extracted by hand from the nut of the Argan tree which is found mostly in Morocco, it has been found to be far superior to Jojoba oil for a hair treatment, and has its own dramatic enhancing performance properties. Check it out:

Argan oil stops the curliness and roughness of hair in an efficient way by penetrating into the hair pores or shafts, thereby increasing elasticity.

Hydrates your hair and nourishes hair growth.

Good for uncontrollable, curly, and unmanageable hair as it restores smoothness.

Natural antioxidants present in Argan Oil strengthen the hair by repairing the damaged cellular membrane of your hair.

The presence of Vitamin E in Argan Oil makes it a tremendous agent for hair damaged by heat, over-styling, and repairs hair traumatized by chemicals used in perms and hair coloring.

Non-greasy Argan Oil locks in moisture and restores luster and shine. Oh yeah!

You know from past experience that J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars deliver! All natural, using only edible oils, no animal testing, containing no animal products, biodegradable, handmade in the U.S.A., multi-tasking abilities, good for you and the environment… just plain old “spot-on” when it comes to what we need and want!

On page 26 of the July issue of Kitchenware News, the article “Trade Show Buzz” by Lorrie Baumann, (seriously, it does tie in) points out the varied reasons why Americans have been turning away from foreign products and seeking replacement items made in the U.S.A.

It’s a no-brainer… products manufactured and purchased in the United States keep the dollars in our families and communities, ultimately helping our economy.

And not only are folks looking for “Made in the U.S.A.”, they’re also desiring all-natural, healthy, organic products. I know a company that fits the bill, that hits a home run on all these requirements… J.R.LIGGETT’S. C’mon, you knew I was heading this way!

J.R.LIGGETT’S “home base”… 973 NH RT 12A Cornish, New Hampshire 03745, or for your convenience: www.jrliggett.com . Whole Foods Markets throughout the United States and Canada also carry J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bars, as do various natural food, drug, and specialty stores. They’re onto a good thing!

You know it’s great stuff! Earth and people friendly, no animal testing nor products, 100% bio-degradable, pure 100% natural oils, gives hair body and manageability, rinses out cleanly and easily thus using less water, made with fresh, New Hampshire spring water, great for backpacking and travel, and a money back guarantee! Try that with an over-seas company!

Good business, good cents, good for America. You know that satisfied feeling you have when you’ve done something worthwhile for all concerned. Keep it in the U.S.A.!

It’s not a pleasant subject, but the reality is, back to school can mean thousands of children being exposed to head lice. Children by their very nature love to play closely with other children–rolling around on the floor together, heads close to one another as they work on projects, and eagerly sharing one another’s hats and caps. Parents dread the idea of receiving that letter from the school nurse stating that a case of head lice is going around school, or worse, your own child has lice. Years ago, my own child came home with ’The Letter’–turned out she had nothing more than a mild case of dandruff, but it’s tough not to panic as the idea of “what now?” is foremost in your mind.

For several years mothers, the media, school nurses, and entomologists have been reporting that many head louse populations have become resistant to the chemicals used to treat them. Preventive treatments with anti-lice agents are not recommended and can lead to illness and persistent itching.

Permethrin and Lindane are insecticides used to treat head lice infestations. The success rate of Permethrin has dropped, and Lindane, which is toxic to humans, has been known to cause seizures, and temporary paralysis. Lindane has been used both as an agricultural insecticide and as a pharmaceutical treatment for lice and scabies. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies Lindane as “moderately hazardous”.

Taking into consideration the information I’ve come across on the Internet about the chems used to treat head lice, I’ve wondered if there isn’t a more natural, safer, and simpler way to attack this plague. Do it yourself treatments use plant oils such as olive oil, eucalyptus, tea tree, geranium and lavender, which make the hair shaft slippery and difficult for lice to cling to. The aromatic properties of these oils also repel the lice. It sounds to me that if possible, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” should be our modus operandi here. Obviously, we would caution our children to refrain from sharing hats, caps, combs, hair bows, etc., but are there any other precautions we should be taking?

J.R.Liggett’s Shampoo bars have for years been touted as a real preventative for these tiny nasty creatures. It has to do with the natural vegetable oils, olive, castor, and coconut oils in a non-detergent base that the head lice don’t like. All six different shampoo bars that J.R.Liggett offers, contain olive oil, coconut oil, and castor oil. The Tea Tree shampoo bar formula works well for dermatological issues, and the Ultra Balanced shampoo bar is unscented. We recommend using these on your children’s hair before they get infected and they will stand a good chance of coming through the season with out a single “nit”.

Over a year ago, a user of J.R.Liggett’s shampoo bar left a Facebook comment referring to being proactive in preventing head lice: “We learned our lesson last year–the hard way–twice! Thanks to your shampoo Jim, this year we’re A.O.K.!

“Once upon a time, Americans enjoyed hard work…” So goes the title of chapter three in author and artist’s Eric Sloan’s book, Once Upon a Time-The way America was. What admirable attributes did previous hard-working generations have? Yesterday, my husband and I had the privilege of watching reenactments of various elements of life and labor on a farm as it would have been just a mite over 80 years ago. As I watched the men working on that hot day, I realized the drive and determination these folks had to possess to make an everyday living and to put food on the table on a daily basis. I thought to myself, those old farmers knew how to work… and how to live.

Steadfast, generous, truthful, with good morals and integrity. They showed thriftiness, making do with meager possessions, passing them down, and wearing them out. For the most part, a person stood strong through the trials of life, sharing their abundance (or in many instances, their “hardly enough”) with those who had less or none. A person’s word was a contract; folks knew dishonesty was not only downright wrong, but they also knew lies could ruin a family’s reputation for future generations… word gets around, you know.

“Once upon a time, Americans were frugal…” Eric Sloan writes; ” Waste was once deplorable, considered bad manners… the mark of a fool and something quite un-American. Nothing, once upon a time, was wasted.” When the recipe for J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar fell from that old New England cookbook and fluttered to the floor, a snippet of the honest, hard-working generations of the past stepped into the present. A recipe for washing one’s hair; and after a tad of tweaking and smidge of fine-tuning, an opportunity for you and I to recapture in spirit the ideals of long ago… old-fashioned? You bet! But always in style.

Good and common sense never goes out of style… A mild, multi-tasking shampoo bar, using clean, crystal clear waters sprung from an old earth. Made from all natural ingredients that we can trust not to harm the rivers or streams. Thrifty in form and use; replacing a plastic bottle-filled liquid of unpronounceable chemicals that strip your hair of its own healthy and necessary oils. Handy to use in home or for travel. Wise and wonderful, excellent for a body soap and shaving, this bar rings true and honest, no frills… just hard-working craftsmanship.

For you, for today and tomorrow… grab your slice of the past, the spirit of pride and honesty. Order J.R.LIGGETT’S Shampoo Bar here.
